THE fight against cancer has taken a step forward with the launch of the revolutionary Varian TrueBeam Radiotherapy System at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre which allows patients to undergo treatments in as little as five minutes.
With the advanced innovative first-of-its-kind system available right at our doorstep, traditional therapy that has limitations are a thing of the past. The new system is designed to treat moving targets with pin-point precision and speed, which helps protect healthy tissues and critical organs.
Speaking at the launch of the new system, SJMC hospital chief executive officer Dr Vasuhi Murugiah said SJMC was the first medical facility in the country to offer patients a leading edge cancer care that brings hope in cancer prognosis and treatment.
“The TrueBeam system is a game-changer, designed to treat tumours anywhere in the body meticulously with advanced speed, shortening treatment schedules.”
“The fully-integrated system is able to provide our clinicians treatment options that are best suited for patients based on their individual needs,” she said.
Dr Vasuhi added that SJMC’s Cancer Centre would continue to provide the best healthcare solutions and make it as affordable as it could for all Malaysians to seek treatment.
According to the Malaysian Oncology Society website, one in 5.5 Malaysians is expected to get cancer in their lifetime. The most common cancer in Malaysian males is lung cancer followed by colorectal cancer and nasopharyngeal or nose cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in females followed by colorectal cancer and cervical cancer.
The incidence of cancer in Malaysia has increased from 32,000 cases in 2008 to 37,400 in 2012; and the number is expected to rise to 56,932 by 2025.
SJMC clinical oncologist Dr Matin Mellor Abdullah who was present at the launch of the new system said TrueBeam’s enhanced image guidance scans the shape, size and area of the cancerous tumour with pin-point precision.
“This enables optimised treatment with targeted radiation which minimises exposure to the surrounding healthy tissue and cells. The system has proven to be effective especially in treating complex cancers affecting lung, liver, abdomen, cervix, head, neck and breast,” he said.
