MORE than 200 young contestants pitted their skills at the 1st Chinese Chess Tournament at Summit Subang USJ last month.

The whole shopping mall’s concourse was transformed into a “battlefield” as contestants used their wit and knowledge to outdo one another.

According to The Summit Subang USJ senior marketing manager Wivien San, the tournament was to promote the chess game as a healthy mental activity for children.

“The Chinese chess game helps in learning development especially for those who started playing it from a young age.”

“Besides winning attractive prizes, the children will also get a chance to come together to enjoy this tournament,” she said.

This is the first tournament organised by the shopping mall and Mega Chess Academy which is supported by the Persatuan Xiang Qi Putrajaya. The tournament is divided into four categories for children of different age groups, most promising female contestant for all age groups and best school for primary and secondary categories.

Participants also got to join a free workshop provided by the organisers.
