It wasn't just all-out punch lines during the two-day Laugh Die You 3 performances over the weekend - the cast, headlined by Hero Singh, also tickled the generous bones of over 4,000 patrons enough for them to donate more than RM50,000, raising much-needed funds to help fulfill wishes of terminally ill children across the country.
The stand-up comedy show was packed to the brim each night and during the intermission, the audience literally swarmed six Subang Jaya teenagers who walked through the entire hall at the HGH Convention Centre while “Hero Singh” a.k.a. Gurmit Singh belted out a song to encourage the crowd to respond to the appeal.
“Members of the audience eagerly wanted to drop their donations into the box I was carrying. I was turning left and right endlessly in response to the very generous support,” said Ivan Chew, one of the six teens.
“It was a long way from the front row right to the back of the convention centre and all along the way, people kept coming up or calling to me to put in their donations. I saw RM50 and RM100 notes being dropped in. Wow!” exclaimed Teoh Tien Wern, another teen.
Their siblings Isaac Chew and Teoh Tien Tzern; together with Lim Jia Quan and Reuel Gan Zuo Shan, made up the remainder of the team collecting on behalf of Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia (CWS).
These teens said the audience support was so emotionally positive that it almost outshone the star performers at the show - which included comedians Joanne Kam, Singapore's Kumar plus guest performer Fakkah Fuzz & Papi Zak - all backed by the band Hydra.
CWS vice president Teoh Teik Hoong said the overwhelming support showed Malaysians were a caring lot. “We would like to thank Popcorn Studio, the organiser of the show for inviting our society to be a partner in this great performance.”
Teoh said the society carries out its mission throughout the year fulfilling wishes of children who were terminally ill.
“We travel all across the country, at times into the interiors of the country to bring a smile back to children who need them most. We have spent more than RM2.5 million over the last eight years making wishes come true for more than 500 children.
“Funds are constantly needed to help make wishes come true for these children. We welcome donations and even invitations to be a beneficiary of charity drives.”
