SUBANG Jaya's Municipal Council grabbed the Green Era Award for Malaysia at an international Green Economy Forum in Berlin, Germany recently.
Council president Dato Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan who attended the ceremony to receive the award was elated with the international recognition for the local council which was the sole recipient from Malaysia.
"The annual event was organised by 'OMAC' Otherways Management Association Club-Paris and the award was a surprise to all of us."
"The Global Green Award is set up to recognize true global sustainable exemplars including governmental institutions, green building councils, environmental agencies and green companies that have been innovative and creative in pursuing the sustainable imperative," he said.
Nor Hisham said MPSJ was picked for its sustainable efforts as a local authority in tackling biomass, creating community edible gardens (Kebun Komuniti) and food waste.
"We were picked for the sustainability of our green efforts. The selection and judging was done by the panel of judges from the organisers who picked us as a contestant."
"It's an eye-opener for us. It encourages us to continue to show our continuous efforts and determination to be a Green City by 2030 in line with our Strategic Plan," he added.
Nor Hisham said he was proud that the efforts of the local council were acknowledged by the international NGO which has 132 members around the globe.
"The previous year's recipient of the Green Era Award was the former President of Sri Lanka Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa."
"In Malaysia, Universiti Malaya was a recipient several years ago. We are the first local authority from Malaysia to be recognised at this international forum," he added.
MPSJ also clinched the Smart City Innovative Applications Award 2016 in Taiwan recently.
Nor Hisham said the international award was for the council's Biomass Integrated Centre and Edible Green Community initiatives.
"Malaysia (MPSJ) is one out of five to six countries who were accorded the award. This award is for Malaysia, and not just for MPSJ," he said.
