CYCLING around the neighbourhood in the middle of the night or driving around the streets at different times of the day voluntarily is not everyone’s cup of tea.

But there are groups of people out there who are willing to sacrifice their time and energy for the community just to make sure that their neighbourhood is crime free.

Selfless and unwavering, these groups of men and women who belong to the Rukun Tetangga family spend their time on crime prevention patrols; coordinating efforts with the police and carrying out initiatives to unite the community they live in.

Most of the Rukun Tetangga groups who had signed up for the Department of National Unity and Integration’s voluntary patrolling scheme (SRS) carry out crime prevention patrols in their respective neighbourhoods.

Working as teams in their neighbourhood, these groups carry out regular (and also unscheduled) crime prevention patrols either in their cars, on foot or on bicycles.

Rain or shine, these members of the Rukun Tetangga are ever ready to jump into action be it responding to a call for help or an emergency which requires their assistance.

Over in Bandar Sunway, the PJS9 Rukun Tetangga group carry out foot patrols. During their rounds, they also help the local authority in efforts to remove illegal banners and stickers in their neighbourhood.

In Subang Jaya, the SS14, SS15 (SS15/2-3 and Hexagon), SS17 and SS18 Rukun Tetangga groups carry out similar initiatives utilising various resources available to them. Many make their rounds in their vehicles, on foot as well as on bicycles.

Over in USJ, the Rukun Tetangga groups in USJ2, USJ3/4, USJ6, USJ13 and the newly formed pro-tem committee of USJ12 also carry out intensive crime prevention crime efforts in their neighbourhood.

Here’s a pictorial overview of the various Rukun Tetangga groups during their crime prevention patrols.
