KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (Bernama) -- The public should take the initiative to plant more trees to reduce the effect of the current hot and dry weather in the country. In making this call, Landskap Malaysia chairman Tun Jeanne Abdullah said planting new trees could help absorb carbon dioxide from the air, which eventually reduced the effect of greenhouse gases. "Although photosynthesis looks like a simple process, it is a vital process. Trees and forests can affect our climate, (and) therefore, effect our weather. "Climate change is not only an important issue for us, but also the future generation that is going to inherit this beautiful planet," she told the media after officiating the Mitsubishi Corporation and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) tree planting ceremony here Saturday. Over 400 participants from Mitsubishi, UPM staff and students were involved in the tree-planting ceremony aimed to show commitment in restoring tropical rainforest degradation. A total of 5,000 seedlings of 20 species listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red list (almost extinct) were planted during the ceremony. Jeanne is wife of former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. -- BERNAMA
