MANY Subang Jaya residents may have seen the Voluntary Patrol Unit (VPU) making their crime prevention rounds in their neighbourhood. Over the last seven years, the team of volunteers have been driving around in a single Kanchil with beacon lights on the top of the car. The volunteers patrol the streets in different neighbourhoods and even help remove illegal banners along their way. The 10-year-old ageing vehicle which is coming to the end of its life needs to be replaced, according to ADUN Subang Jaya Hannah Yeoh, to be an effective mode of transport for the volunteers to carry out their crime prevention efforts. “Volunteers who are made up of residents patrol with the police and MPSJ. The volunteers come under the Persatuan Sukarelawan Subang Jaya, and comprise mainly retirees who make up the membership of 56.” “We are appealing to the public, especially Subang Jaya residents to come forward if they wish to donate a good condition second hand vehicle to the VPU,” she said in a press conference. Hannah said the VPU has clocked in more than 9,000 hours of patrols since they started in 2010. “They serve as the ears and eyes of the police and they also assist MPSJ in removing illegal banners.” “The vehicle needs financial support to maintain too. I am allocating RM5,000 to the VPU for this year to help with the maintenance of the vehicle,” she said. VPU vice chairman Michael Sundram who was present said he hoped caring companies or individuals will step forward to help the association to replace the ageing Kanchil. “We need at least RM10,000 annually to run our operations. The bulk of it goes to the running of the vehicle,” he said. If you have a spare vehicle you would like to donate to the VPU or if you want to contribute some funds to them, please call ADUN Subang Jaya Hannah Yeoh’s office at 03 5631 2768.
